Nurse Unseen is a heartfelt documentary that explores the vital contributions and sacrifices of Filipino nurses, who make up a significant portion of the global healthcare workforce. These individuals played an essential role in the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, facing unprecedented challenges and risks. Directed with sensitivity and care, the film sheds light on stories of courage, dedication, and the human cost of a global crisis.

The first time I watched Nurse Unseen, it was a deeply emotional experience for me and my family. My wife, a nurse, found the documentary both revealing and difficult to watch. Reliving the trauma of the pandemic—the fear, the loss, and the weight of responsibility—was overwhelming. It brought back memories of the struggles faced by healthcare workers who fought to protect others while often lacking the support and protection they deserved.

Watching it again at the Culver City Theater, however, gave me a new perspective. With some distance from those initial emotions, I could focus on the brilliance of its storytelling. The film not only showcases the sacrifices of Filipino nurses but also highlights the systemic challenges they faced, including inequities in the healthcare system. I found myself appreciating the craft and intention behind every story and visual, as well as the immense courage of those who shared their experiences on screen.

Jo Koy's involvement as the executive producer adds an incredible layer of visibility to this film. His passion for amplifying Filipino stories and supporting this project cannot be overstated. Through his platform, Nurse Unseen reaches a wider audience, ensuring these stories of resilience and humanity are heard and remembered. The thought that this film could garner an Oscar nomination speaks volumes about its significance and the impact it continues to have.

For me, Nurse Unseen is a call to acknowledge and honor the sacrifices of Filipino nurses and healthcare workers worldwide. It’s a reminder of the strength and compassion they bring to their work, often at great personal cost. Watching it twice not only deepened my understanding but also reinforced my gratitude for their unwavering dedication.
